Walnuts are Special
Did you know that walnuts contain the heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid? It contributes to the reduction of “bad” LDL cholesterol. In a recent study at UC Davis, 1.5 ounces a day (a handful) were found to be beneficial as part of a heart healthy diet. The same fat in slightly smaller amounts is also found in almonds and hazelnuts.

Healthy Oils
Did you know that canola oil, flaxseed oil, and soybean oils contain omega-3 fatty acids related to those found in fish?. Olive oil has some omega-3 fatty acids, but is generally high in monounsaturated fats, a healthy oil. These fats contributes to the reduction of “bad” LDL cholesterol and are a beneficial part of a heart healthy diet.

Leafy Greens for Health
Did you know leafy green vegetables like kale and collards contain some omega-3 fatty acids related to those found in fish? This fat contributes to the reduction of “bad” LDL cholesterol and is a beneficial part of a heart healthy diet.

Olive Oil, it’s Healthy
Did you know that olive oil is a heart-healthy oil, and is just as versatile as butter? Mix a little into your mashed potatoes to bring out the flavor. Saute vegetables, chicken or fish in it. Use it for salad dressings. Sprinkle it over popocorn with garlic salt. Pour some flavorful extra virgin olive oil into a saucer and dip bread into it, add some fresh herbs, delicious!
